Why is the soil so poor?

Soil Erosion

There are several reasons why the quality of the soil is very poor now, when it used to be very fertile:

  • drought (lack of rainfall)
  • the use of a lot of chemicals on the soil in the recent past
  • one crop has been grown on the same land for many, many years. This takes all the goodness from the soil. Crops should be rotated - e.g. different crops should be grown on a piece of land each year and also some of the land should be left fallow each year (nothing should be grown on it)
  • most of the trees in the area have been cut down.
This web site will concentrate on the problems caused by cutting down trees and the importance of using natural fertilisers rather than chemical ones.
